Sam Altman

Three placements worth noticing

In plain Englishthe three parts of Sam Altman’s chart that fit Sam’s public work best. Astrology describes resemblances, not causes.

Sun in Taurus

Taurus builds slowly and values what compounds. His public arc follows that grain: Loopt, which he started as a Stanford student, then Y Combinator, where he became president in 2014, then OpenAI, where the bet was that scaling models with more data and compute would keep paying off. ChatGPT, released at the end of 2022, put that bet in front of the public.

The trap is stubbornness. A fixed sign holds a plan once it is set, and Taurus can be slow to change course when the evidence shifts. The gift is stamina: a long, expensive build that keeps going while others get bored.

Mercury conjunct Venus

Mercury is how a chart talks, and Venus is what it finds persuasive. Both sit in Aries, a degree or two apart, so the voice is plain, quick and aimed at the point. His essays, such as “How to Be Successful” and ’Moore’s Law for Everything’, are short declarative sentences stacked into an argument.

The trap is speed. An Aries pair can state a conclusion before the argument is built, and a confident line can outrun its evidence. The gift is a pitch that reaches the ask in the first minute, a useful skill for someone who spent years listening to founders pitch.

Jupiter in Aquarius

Jupiter expands whatever it touches, and in Aquarius it expands toward the future and the group. His public message about AI is built from that material: large, optimistic claims about abundance and about technology that reaches everyone, with talk of safety alongside it. That is a Jupiter in Aquarius habit of thinking at the scale of a whole society.

The trap is abstraction. Aquarius can speak about humanity more easily than about the next quarter’s details, and promises can outrun delivery. The gift is a mind that treats a big, odd idea as worth a real attempt.

Sam Altman’s Human Design type

In plain EnglishHuman Design is a 1987 system, not science. It reads the same birth moment as a map of how energy works for one person, and it starts with one of five types.

In Human Design, a 1/3 profile is the researcher who learns by testing. Loopt, which was later acquired, and the years at Y Combinator watching many startups win and miss, read as a long run of experiments before OpenAI. A Manifesting Generator is said to move fast, skip steps and circle back to fix them, and Sacral authority means a gut answer in the moment. The 2-14 channel is linked to steering resources toward a direction, close to a fundraiser’s job.

Sam Altman is a Manifesting Generator. The strategy for that type is “to respond, then inform”. The authority is Sacral, which is the part of the chart Human Design says to trust for decisions. The 1/3 profile is the personality role: the first number is the conscious line, the second the unconscious one. Three of the nine centers are defined, joined by two channels.

How reliable is this chart?

In plain Englishthe Sun and Moon signs of any chart are only as good as the date, and the Rising sign is only as good as the birth time.

Rodden rating: A. Rodden ratings are the grades astrologers use for birth data, from AA (best) down to DD (worst). A means the time was reported by the person or by someone close to them, from memory, with no document seen. That is usually good, because birth times are hard to forget, but it is not verified. Treat the Sun, Moon and Rising sign as likely, and take the houses with a small grain of salt. The source is the Astro-Databank entry linked in the facts table.

A quick test with our own calculator: the Rising sign stays Taurus from 1 minutes before to 83 minutes after the listed time, and the Human Design type, authority and profile hold for at least three hours either way.

To test a different time, use the birth chart calculator.
