Why there are thirteen

Twelve lunar cycles are about 354 days, which is eleven days short of a calendar year, so about every third year gets a thirteenth. In 2027 the extra one falls in August, with new moons on Aug 2 and Aug 31. The first is a total solar eclipse in Leo, the second an ordinary new moon in Virgo.
