The names

In plain Englishthe names are folk labels for the seasons, and they come from the Old Farmer’s Almanac in North America.

Wolf, Snow, Worm, Pink, Flower, Strawberry, Buck, Sturgeon, Harvest, Hunter’s, Beaver and Cold are the standard twelve. The Harvest Moon is the one nearest the September equinox, which in 2027 is the Sep 15 full moon in Pisces. Other traditions (Native American, Celtic, Chinese) use different names, so we only list the almanac set.

How astrologers read a full moon

In plain Englisha full moon is a high point: whatever has been building for two weeks comes into view.

Astrologers pair the Moon’s sign with the Sun’s opposite sign, so each full moon sets two needs against each other. A Leo full moon sets the wish to be seen against the need to belong. That is why the short notes in the table give both signs. You do not have to believe any of this to use the dates: many people use a full moon as a prompt to finish a project or have a conversation they have been postponing.

Two features of 2027 stand out. There is a pair of full moons in Scorpio, on Apr 20 and May 20, with the Sun in Taurus both times. And three full moons (Feb 20, Jul 18, and Aug 17) are penumbral lunar eclipses; the 2027 eclipses page has the details.

A simple way to use the dates

In plain Englishpick one thing to finish, one thing to say and one thing to let go of.

The tradition is to treat the full moon as a deadline for what began at the last new moon. Write down what has changed since then and what is still unfinished. If a full moon lands inside a Mercury retrograde, as three do this year, leave extra room for delays and rereads before you send or sign anything.

To see which house of your chart each full moon lands in, use the birth chart calculator. The matching new moons are on the 2027 new moons page, and today’s sky shows the current moon phase.
