Human Design authority
Ego Authority in Human Design: Willpower Decisions
Ego authority, also called heart authority, is the Human Design decision method for people with a defined heart center and no higher authority. Human Design says to ask what you truly want and can keep your word on, and to say it out loud.
What ego authority is
In plain EnglishYou decide by checking what you genuinely want and whether you can keep your promise.
Ego authority sits in the heart center, which Human Design links to willpower, promises and self-worth. It applies only when the solar plexus, sacral and spleen are all open, because those authorities rank higher.
It comes in two forms. In the manifested form, the heart connects to the throat. In the projected form, the heart connects to the G center. Human Design is a modern system and not science, so read the wording as a model of motivation.
How it feels on a Tuesday
In plain EnglishIt is the difference between “I should” and “I will.”
You are asked to chair a committee. Everyone says you would be good at it. You notice your body does not argue with the compliment, but you also do not want to spend your Thursdays on it.
Another version is a promise you made out of politeness. The method says that willpower comes from wanting, not from guilt, and a promise made without wanting tends to fall apart.
The gift and the trap
In plain EnglishThe gift is follow-through, and the trap is promising from pride or duty.
The gift is that when you do commit, you finish. People with this authority can be strikingly reliable on the few things they chose for themselves.
The trap is overpromising to prove worth, or using willpower to push through something you never wanted. Another trap is saying “what I want” while actually saying “what looks good.” Human Design teachers disagree on whether this authority is always about wanting or sometimes about capacity, and many describe both: do you want it and can you deliver it?
A practical way to use it
In plain EnglishSay your answer out loud and see if it sounds true.
Try this method.
- Speak the choice to yourself or another person: “I want to take this job.”
- Notice whether the sentence feels honest or staged.
- Ask what you would need to rest, eat or protect to keep the commitment.
- Decline anything you could only do out of obligation.
Projected ego people usually do this best with a trusted listener. Manifested ego people can say it to the person affected. Check which one you have with the Human Design chart tool.
Which types can have it
In plain EnglishIt belongs to the two types that have no sacral to lean on.
Manifestors with a defined heart that connects to the throat have the manifested form. Projectors with a defined heart that connects to the G center have the projected form. Generators and Manifesting Generators use sacral or emotional authority. Reflectors use lunar.
If you do not have it
In plain EnglishAn open heart can feel like a constant need to prove yourself.
Without a defined heart, the system says you may take on commitments to earn your place or push past your limits to look dependable. People without ego authority make decisions by other means, and the heart center is where this pressure tends to show up. A useful rule is to avoid promising dates or deadlines on the spot, and to answer after you have checked your calendar and energy.
Questions people ask
- What is ego authority in Human Design?
- It is the decision method for a defined heart center when no emotional, sacral or splenic authority applies. Human Design says it asks whether you want something and can honor the promise.
- Does ego authority mean being selfish?
- The word ego in this system refers to willpower and self-worth, not vanity. Still, the method asks you to take your own wants seriously, which can feel uncomfortable for people who put others first.
- What is the difference between manifested and projected ego?
- In manifested ego the heart connects to the throat, so a Manifestor can voice the decision directly. In projected ego the heart connects to the G center, so a Projector often needs to talk it through with someone.
